Project Spotlight: The Emma Willard Arts Wing and Its Collaborative Achievement

When it was announced recently that Annum Architects had been awarded the prestigious “Best Project” award in the K-12 Education sector from ENR New York, for its Emma Willard project, C.T. Male also felt some of the glow of this success.

C.T. Male had played a key supporting role in the school’s recent campus enhancement, working under Annum Architects to deliver civil, geotechnical, structural, and survey services. The project involved a full interior renovation of the historic chapel, transforming it into a live performance venue, and the construction of a new Arts Wing connected via a basement tunnel, with Chad Kortz, the firm’s VP of Engineering, heading up the firm’s contribution.

“The new arts wing has its main floor at the basement level with a green roof that blends into the surrounding lawn area making it unique,” Chad noted, describing how the design incorporated a green roof and modern architectural elements that complemented the campus’s historic character.

C.T. Male contributed from the conceptual and schematic design phase through construction and closeout. The scope included a geotechnical report for the new structure, site and utility design, stormwater management, and SWPPP compliance.

As we reflect on the project, we smile knowing we have the ability to impact students and the environment in which they learn in. While the architectural award was formally given to Annum Architects, Kortz emphasized the value of being part of a recognized team, reflecting the importance of quality collaboration and reliability in project delivery.

The Emma Willard project demonstrates how effective teaming—across disciplines and firms—can result in a successful outcome.
