University at Albany Casey Stadium and
Recreational Field Turf Replacement
C.T. Male was retained by the University at Albany (UAlbany) to survey, design and oversee construction of their synthetic turf fields at Casey Stadium and Recreational Field. Close collaboration between the UAlbany design team, and their athletics and grounds departments were key in determining which features were most important. This high level of collaboration also effectively incorporated everyone’s best ideas into the final design.
The project included a review of existing site record and utility information, a survey of existing topography, coordination meetings and communication with several manufacturers of synthetic turf surfaces to ultimately select the safest, most aesthetic and longest lasting fields.
The project also included site improvements such as replacement of stadium wall padding, field goal post pads, scoreboard painting, chain link fence restoration, installation of safety netting, and a coating of the concrete curbing around the recreational field with a non-slip material.
Since the fields were generally well drained with a few exceptions, the design called for fine grading of the underlying subbase material once the existing synthetic turf layer was removed. Casey Stadium field was also equipped with a rubber base layer to help absorb impacts to the participants, which will include football, soccer and lacrosse events. Finally, the ramp connecting the PE Building to Casey Field was fitted with a new non-infill turf material and underlying foam base layer to help prevent slipping.
