Architectural & Structural Evaluation and Phase 1 Restoration Project –
1834 Herkimer County Jail

C.T. Male was engaged by the Friends of Historic Herkimer County to perform a visual evaluation of the 1834 Jail, a National Register-listed landmark located at 327 North Main Street. The building, though no longer in active use, serves as a tourism site with guided tours offered by the Herkimer County Historical Society. Years of water infiltration and recent flooding had compromised the Church Street façade, limiting public access and threatening the structural integrity of the building.

To preserve the jail’s historic character, C.T. Male secured a $239,000 NYS Historic Preservation Grant in 2018 and initiated Phase 1 restoration work focused on critical structural repairs. Services included architectural and structural evaluations, and planning for façade restoration. Phase 2, currently in design, will address restoration and preservation work.
